Geodes that contain multiple distinct minerals within the same cavity, particularly those combining deep amethyst with calcite formations, agate banding, or stalactite structures, are among the least common. Exceptional color saturation distributed consistently across the full interior, rather than concentrated in pockets are also rare. The pieces most difficult to source are those where dramatic visual qualities appear throughout the entire formation rather than isolated within it. That consistency is what separates a truly rare crystal from just an unusual one.
Both are natural amethyst formations, but they differ in shape. A geode cave has a wide, open interior that reveals a broad crystal landscape when viewed from the front. A cathedral geode is taller and narrower, with a pointed or arched top resembling a Gothic cathedral window. Caves tend to showcase more surface area of crystal, while cathedrals make striking vertical display pieces.
